Benetech published a report this month about the job search environment for people with disabilities. A focus of the report is the increase in machine learning technologies by resume-screening services. These services contain biases against those with disabilities (as well as women.) It servers as a reminder that AI does not stand for "always impartial." Machine learning technologies are taught on data sets selected and/or created by flawed human beings. It's also a reminder how when people and companies have invested a lot in a product (like this resume screening software) they can become defensive and blind to the flaws in it, even if they start with the best intentions. Consumers (in this case, companies using these resume-screening services) have to hold them accountable.
